AREA OF DEEP WHITE
MATTER EDEMA WITHIN RIGHT PARIETO-FRONTAL REGION
View image
The arrow points
to areas of low attenuation within the deep white matter involving the
right parieto-frontal region. The low attenuation is confined to the
white matter and extends and interdigitates between the sulci sparing
the gray matter. This is characteristic for vasogenic edema.
Vasogenic edema
may be associated with neoplastic or inflammatory lesions. In a person
with normal renal function, and otherwise no contraindications, the
use of intravenous iodinated contrast is indicated.

Note comparison
case above. The arrow points to areas of deep white matter low attenuation
in the right fronto-parietal region which interdigitate among the sulci.
The possibility of underlying inflammatory or neoplastic lesions should
be excluded.
RING-ENHANCING LESION
WITHIN DEEP WHITE MATTER
View third image
The arrow points
to an area of faint ring enhancement within the area of deep white matter
edema. This corresponds to the area of abnormality.
This patient was
HIV positive. Ring-enhancing lesion should be considered suspicious
for neoplastic or inflammatory lesions. Statistically, this is likely
toxoplasmosis.
