Bleeding above the outer surface of the brain (Epidural hematoma): A 20-year-old man presented with a brief loss of consciousness following a fall from standing height. He had a brief period following the fall where he was awake and seemed O.K. Then, he became progressively less responsive. A CT (computed tomography scan) of the head reveals compression of some of the major structures of the brain. A lense-shaped white area on the CT is consistent with an acute epidural hematoma is seen on the right (will appear on the left when you look at the CT). (L.S.)
