Trapped
hernia (Strangulated umbilical hernia): A 53-year-old man presented to his
physician with low-grade fever and abdominal pain. A tender, red area around his
umbilical area with a 3 centimeter mass/bulge is shown. Surgical exploration revealed
a small portion of strangulated omentum (the covering of the bowel which has lost
its supply of blood from being trapped/strangled by the abdominal wall) through
an umbilical hernia. (L.S.)
