A key aspect in the evaluation
of fractures is the presence or absence of displacement. This girl presents
with obvious rotational deformity. Displaced metacarpal fractures require
open or closed reduction. Unless there is skin damage or neurovascular
compromise, metacarpal fractures can be aligned by splinting and confirmed
by x-ray. If significant angulation or shortening persists after splinting
and reduction, obtain consultation.
