Decision Point 7

CONTINUED PATIENT COURSE

You decide that the patient is a good candidate for outpatient therapy. The patient agrees and is trained in self-administration of enoxaparin by a nurse. The patient's brother, who is a psychiatrist, arrives at the ED to drive the patient home. He informs you that while in training he "pulled alot of shifts" in the local ED and "almost went into the field, but wanted to get 'specialty training' instead." He further states that when he was working in "ERs," "we never sent DVTs home." He has a few questions for you, and as he asks them, he casually mentions-three times-that their other brother is an attorney. What is the mechanism of action of low molecular weight heparins?

a) Acts like a fibrinolytic
b) Replaces Factor VIII and von Willebrand Factor
c) Prevents platelet aggregation
