Andrew
J. Weiland, MD
Dr. Weiland
is currently a Professor of Surgery (Orthopaedics and Plastic
Surgery) at Cornell University Medical College in New York and
is an attending orthopaedist at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
He did his under graduate work at Colby College in Waterville,
Maine and, then, graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine
of Wake Forest Univesity in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Dr.
Weiland did his post graduate training at the University of
Michigan and completed his orthopaedic training at the Johns
Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He then completed a hand fellowship
at the Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky as well as
an ASIF fellowship in internal fixation under the direction
of Professor Hans Willenegger.
Following
his extensive training, Dr. Weiland became Director of the Division
of Upper Extremity Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School
of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland from 1975-1989. In 1981,
Dr. Weiland was awarded an A.B.C. traveling fellowship. In 1990,
he joined the faculty of Cornell University Medical College
and the Hospital for Special Surgery. Over the years he has
been a visiting professor at national and international venues.
Dr. Weiland
has authored numerous articles and chapters in the field of
hand surgery and vascularized bone grafts.He has been the recipient
of the Kappa Delta Award in 1986 for Outstanding Orthopaedic
Research, and, in 1991, recevied the award for outstanding paper
presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He
is currently on the editorial boards of many peer reviewed journals
and is the Editor in Chief of Techniques in Hand and Upper
Extremity Surgery as well as past President of the American
Society for Surgery of the Hand and past President of the American
Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery. In 1998-1999 he was
the President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery as
well as President of the American Orthopaedic Association
