Displacement of the upper spine of the neck (C-1 on C-2 subluxation): A 37-year-old homeless man presented to the emergency department with a 3-week history of neck pain that had started after a motor vehicle accident. The lateral cervical spin x-ray/(radiograph) shows that the 1st and second bones of the spine have moved out of the proper alignment as a result of an injury to the ligaments that hold the bones in place (subluxation of C-1 on C-2) Fortunately, this disruption had not caused any loss of the patient's ability to feel and move his arms/legs.
