Infection
and formation of clot in a vein of the arm (Septic thrombophlebitis):
This 73-year-old woman presented to her physician with fever
and right arm pain and redness. She had been hospitalized previously
and had an intravenous (IV) line placed at the area of pain. The
presence of fever, redness, a feeling of a cord on the surface
of the skin, and pus coming from the prior IV site is suggestive
of septic thrombophlebitis. (L.S.)
