Septic arthritis:
A 50-year-old man presented with a 2-day history of atraumatic right
middle finger swelling, redness, and pain. There was tenderness and swelling
of the dorsal, medial, and lateral aspects of the proximal interphalangeal
joint. There was pain with axial loading of the joint. The erythrocyte sedimentation
rate was elevated. The leukocyte count was normal. Joint aspirate revealed
a white blood cell count of 50 000/mm3 suggestive of septic arthritis. Here
